Raptor program in Chocolay

MARQUETTE — The public has a chance to get up close and personal with raptors from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 25.

A one-hour program with birds on the glove will be presented at 4 p.m. at the Chocolay Raptor Center, 146 Lakewood Lane, Harvey. Free admission. Donations encouraged.

PWPL to host design book talk

MARQUETTE — The Peter White Public Library would like to invite the public to a presentation of the 2017 Michigan Notable Book, “Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America” at 7 p.m. June 26 in the Shiras Room.

Although Michigan has always been known for its contributions to 20th century manufacturing, it has only recently been recognized for its contributions to mid-century modern design. Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America by Amy Arnold and Brian Conway, selected in 2017 by the Michigan Department of Education and the Library of Michigan as one of twenty books celebrating Michigan, contains nearly 30 essays and interviews that show Michigan’s contribution to modern design in architecture, automobiles, furniture, and education.

Presenter Amy Arnold is the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office’s preservation planner. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Western Michigan University and studied at Duke University before obtaining her master’s degree in historic preservation from Eastern Michigan University. She has been the project manager for Michigan Modern since its inception in 2008.

Snowbound Books will be at this event for book sales and signing.

Alzheimer’s discussion scheduled

MARQUETTE — At 7 p.m. June 28, Lindsay Juricek, regional manager of the Upper Peninsula Division of the Alzheimer’s Association, will present a talk entitled “Alzheimer’s Disease: The Basics,” in the community room of the Peter White Public Library.

Currently, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s which by 2050 could rise to 16 million. In 2017, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia will cost the nation $259 billion which could rise to $1.1 trillion by 2050.

Some one in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, making it the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.

Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. This program will help people learn the facts. This program provides information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment, and much more. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time for learning and dispelling the myths regarding this disease.

Art week event planned at MRHC

MARQUETTE — The Inspiring Art of Film – An Art Week Event is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. June 28 at the Marquette Regional History Center.

The suggested donation is $5.

Local authors Milton Bates, Lynn Domina, Kathleen Heideman, Daniel Rydholm and Russell Thorburn will share their work and clips of the films that inspire them. This open to the public.

All proceeds go to the MRHC.

Local NARFE chapter to meet

MARQUETTE — The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1900, will meet at 1:30 p.m. June 28, in Room B of the Marquette Senior Center, on the lower level of City Hall, 300 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette.

Members may enter from Spring Street, behind Marquette City Hall. Spring Street is one-way from east to west.

MRHC to host art week art stroll

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Regional History Center will host an Art Week Art Stroll at 7 p.m. June 29.

Participants will meet as a group June 29 at the MRHC, then will stroll downtown Marquette to view local art.

An Ekphrasis Writing Workshop is planned from 3 to 4 p.m. June 30.

Dr. Lynn Domina, chair of the Northern Michigan University English Department, will teach participants about how to write about art that inspired them.

Preregister with Janeen Rastall (janeenrastall@yahoo) and get a gift bag June 29. Suggested donation is $8. All proceeds go to the MRHC.

Ekphrasis is from the Greek � the oldest type of writing about art.

Yarrow to perform in Curtis

CURTIS — The Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis welcomes legendary folk artist Peter Yarrow at 7 p.m. July 1.

General admission tickets are $35 and “Meet and Greet” VIP tickets are $50. The VIP passes allow holders to meet Peter before the show, and the ticket includes VIP seating for the concert and a CD.
